Celebrating our women members born in 1945.

Celebrating our women members born in 1945.

Last week our Women’s Golf Division celebrated their members who, born in 1945, are turning 80 years old this year.  The following was written by Jenny Fernley for the occasion.

80 year olds born in 1945 are the product of parents who were trying to come to terms that the War had finally come to an end.

Times were tough, there is no denying that, but for most of us it was a freedom no-one probably under the age of 70 would understand but would love to see it return.

We could play outside to our hearts content – at 5 o’clock we were expected to come home from wherever we were (no watches but we seemed to know).  For me, being in the country, meant I climbed trees, spent a large part of my childhood up Mingenew Hill or down at the Irwin River.  I don’t think my parents ever knew where we were!  Hey, I even picked wildflowers and had bunches everywhere hanging in the garage until Mum threw them out and then they were replenished the following season.  Life was simple.

We were the product of school milk being delivered (the government felt we needed extra nourishment) and of course no fridges in schools, so the milk was left on the verandah!  Many a times the milk had turned and even now I keep my milk intake to a bare minimum.

So here we are all turning 80:

80 years and many of those playing golf:

It’s a life well-played

With Club in hand, a steady stare

Through sun and wind on green so bright

We’ve chased the little white ball

With all our might

Each swing a memory, a story well told

On fairways conquered, brave and bold

The gentle arc, the satisfying sound

Of pars, birdies very rarely found

Though our legs may tire and steps grow slow (oops slow play)

The love of golf continues to grow

We try to keep that gentle swing, a focused gaze

We keep trying to find that rhythm in various ways

So raise a glass, or better yet a tee

To these 80 year olds who golf with glee

May every round bring us joy and grace

And laughter in this very special place

MCC Footy Tipping – Rd 21 – W/ending Sunday 03/08/2025

With another weekend of big margins, could we get a 9 and yes folks Aussie Papillon takes the chockies, great work, you know the drill!  Many of us landed 8, a great effort with a few 7’s and 6’s even a few 5’s oh dear!

Holding on to top spot is Back2Back on 134 but Bardy and Morgo are hot on his heels with 133.  Pants is now 4th on 142 with Kaydee, Ozzie, Chips and KB all near enough on 131.  Paddles slips into 9th on 130 and rounding out our top 10 is S Brennan on 129 along with Sharzy.

Once again we reset the weekly to $20 and with not many rounds left, money is running out!  Friday night at the club has jackpotted again, now $80, not a bad option for a pint a feed and a laugh!

As we near the finish line, it’s time to sharpen the pencils so go get em tippers!!

Best of luck with your tipping!!

Cheers and beers all,

Ted
