Members Competition Update – Wednesday 21 January 2026

Dear Members,

As we move into the post-renewal period, the Club typically sees a decline in member numbers and competition participation. This year has followed that pattern in terms of resignations; however, the majority have not been from our core competition players, whilst new membership intake remains strong.

Members may have noticed longer waitlists over the holiday period. While this is partly seasonal, it also reflects continued and growing demand for both membership and competition golf. The waitlist is an important management tool: in almost all cases, players on the waitlist secure a game, and it provides the Club with valuable data to manage demand and tee sheets effectively.

While the Board recognises the increase in demand and is implementing the strategies outlined below, member behaviour also plays a critical role in ensuring fair access. For example, last Saturday’s mixed competition had 15 players on the waitlist Friday morning, then 27 players withdrew from their tee times leaving 12 free spaces.

Members are asked to enter competitions if they intend to play and, if plans change, to withdraw as early as possible rather than leaving changes until the last minute. Early withdrawals allow other members to access competitions and help the Club manage tee sheets more effectively.

In response to increasing demand, the Club is reviewing and implementing a number of strategies.

In consultation with the Men’s Captain, the following short- and medium-term measures will be implemented:

  1. Additional competition slots will be opened on Wednesday mornings to increase participation.
  2. Guests will not be permitted to enter Wednesday or Saturday competitions during this peak period where member access is constrained. This position will be reviewed outside of this peak period and changes communicated.
  3. Members in Introductory and Restricted categories may access their allocated 12 competition rounds no earlier than four days prior to the competition. Full Playing Members will retain priority access.
  4. Todd will monitor competitions and waitlists daily to maximise member access and participation.

In addition, the Board has approved the following long-term membership measures to manage future demand:

  • The nomination fee for Full Membership will increase from $500 to $2,000. This represents a deliberate shift away from a high-intake, high-attrition membership model.
  • A $500 nomination fee will apply to members aged 26–35.
  • Introductory Membership will attract a $500 nomination fee and will be limited to a 12-month term.

These longer-term measures will take effect following ratification at the next Board meeting and will apply to all new members.

Beyond membership and competition access, the Board is also reviewing green fee and cart pricing. Increases of up to 20% will apply during peak periods, including Fridays, Sundays, and nine-hole golf.

Demand for golf remains strong, and our Club continues to perform at the forefront of that demand. The Board remains committed to proactive planning and regular review to meet changing needs, while maintaining a strong focus on long-term course care.

In this context, we acknowledge Stewart and his team. Despite another summer with no effective rainfall and challenges arising from the ageing irrigation system, issues have been addressed promptly and the course remains in excellent condition. We look forward to strengthening the team further and continuing improvement initiatives.

As always, members with questions or feedback are encouraged to contact me or drop in for a discussion.

Kind regards,
Grant Shortland-Jones, General Manager

Mandurah Country Club Update – Monday 12 January 2026

Mandurah Country Club Update – Monday 12 January 2026

Dear Members,

Welcome to the New Year. We hope you and your families enjoyed a relaxing and enjoyable festive season.

The Member Golf Program has now returned to its normal schedule. Chase the Ace will recommence on Friday 16 January, while Friday night meal service has continued right through, and Women’s post-golf lunches have already resumed. Overall, the club has returned to a largely normal operating program.

The Board is scheduled to meet later this month. As previously communicated by President Ron, the Board will outline the club’s core projects and priorities for the coming year, as guided by our strategic planning framework.

Late last year, the Board approved a number of initiatives aimed at evolving and improving services across the club. These strategies will begin implementation during the first quarter of this year and include the following:

Junior Golf Coordination
Our junior program has been very well supported by volunteer members and parents. However, the Board recognises the need to further formalise and develop this important area.

Gary Colquhoun has been appointed Junior Coordinator and will work closely with Tappie, our juniors, and their parents to support development and participation. Gary will remain hands-on in the Golf Shop, with some of his hours transitioning into this coordination role.

Golf Course
An additional full-time course staff member has been approved and will commence later this month. The primary focus of this role will be bunker presentation and maintenance. While all course staff will continue to contribute to weekly scheduled bunker presentation work, this dedicated position will allow for improved day-to-day bunker maintenance, as well as ongoing maintenance and renovation of problem areas.

Golf Operations
Alan has committed additional hours in the Golf Shop, allowing Todd greater capacity to focus on supporting and servicing the member golf program. Todd will work more closely with club committees to assist with program administration, reduce volunteer workload, and ensure a more consistent approach across all aspects of member golf.

Communication
Isaac Heales has been a valuable asset to the club as a casual employee across course maintenance, golf operations, and the bar, while also being a highly engaged member. Isaac will now join the club in a full-time role, spending three days per week on the course to strengthen maintenance outcomes and two days in the office focusing on communications.

This communications role will work across all areas of the club to modernise and improve how we communicate with members, provide clearer day-to-day updates, and enhance understanding of club activities and initiatives. A focus will be to move away from just standard email updates into a more interactive approach.

The Board has strategically identified several core focus areas they believe require improvement and prioritisation focusing in key member improvement areas. These initiatives will be progressively introduced over the coming months, allowing time for training and integration.

While these initiatives do involve increased operational costs, the Finance Sub-Committee has reviewed and endorsed them on the basis that all expenditure remains within our 10-year capital and financial planning. This ensures that essential infrastructure upgrades and replacements remain fully funded and uncompromised.

We thank members for their ongoing support and look forward to another positive year for the club.

Kind regards,
Grant Shortland-Jones, General Manager
